Kevin Carter took a picture that made the world weep. A starving Sudanese toddler collapses on her way to a feeding center while a vulture waits nearby. Carter was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Feature Photography in 1994. Three months later he sadly committed suicide due to depression.

They say a picture can paint a thousand words. I struggle to find the words. I feel extreme sadness and physically ill when I look at this photo. I honestly have to catch my breath and keep it together.

I have had this picture on file for a long time. It’s a very blunt reminder that we are all so blessed for that which we have, and often take so much for granted. It is always so easy to forget this, when people not that far away have so very little to live for.

That picture is absolutely heartbreaking. Living in a country of excess, it is so easy to remain insulated, forget what goes on in the world around us and how even a small involvement can lead to change for others.

I am so proud/excited for you – being a part of something greater, creating awareness…it’s a beautiful thing and says a great deal about the person you are.

Thank you for posting this, Jen. It’s a very powerful, transfixing photo after all these years. I wish you safe travel in Sudan with Door of Hope Australia film documentary crew, and a voice that will be increasingly heard as an agent of awareness and change.

It makes me ill to see people feeding their animals gourmet food while there are children struggling to find food. More pictures like this should be on prime time TV. Problem is, most can not handle it. If they just realized that a few dollars to the right organization can do so much. Just 10 minutes out of a week can help so much. That act of kindness returns to you 10 fold.
